Adoption Fee
Our adoption fee is $250. This fee is a donation to the rescue, that funds the care of not only the dog you are adopting, but other dogs in our program as well. The adoption fee is fully tax deductible.
We are sometimes asked why the adoption fee is so much. Below is a rough example of what our costs average per dog:
- $50-$75 per month - Food, supplements, medications, toys, treats, etc.
- $10-$15 - Leashes, collars, tags, etc.
- $100- Ground transport for a dog being adopted long distance
- $100 - $120 - Initial Vet Visit - includes 7 in 1, bordatella, rabies vaccinations, heartworm test, ehrlichia/lyme test and fecal
- $80 - $110 - Spay/Neuter
- $45 - $65 - Treatment with Drontal (to deworm, and eliminate giardia if present, another southern problem)
- $35-$40 - Grooming and external parasite removal
- $250-$350 - Heartworm treatment (many of our southern dogs come into rescue HW+, when they test negative it is a gift)
- $20-$25 per month - Heartworm and Flea/Tick prevention
- $10-$12 - per day Boarding (when necessary until foster space opens up)
- $10 - $1,000+ Other necessary veterinary treatment $$ range
So the average costs incurred for a 'healthy' dog, that only needs vaccinations, spay/neuter and basic care is approximately $375. As you can see from the prices above, many cost MUCH more.
You should also bare in mind that the average cost to care for a large breed pet such as a GSD per year is approximately $1500. This is for food, annual check-ups and things like that. This amount could easily double or even triple should your dog become ill and need extensive tests, surgery or other treatments. So please carefully consider if you are able and/or willing to invest this into your pet. If not, PLEASE wait to adopt!.
